Retro Design is Back – Retro Websites

Recently have been dealing with lots of responsive web design some mobile tools and plugins for those mentioned above. But I have also encountered several amazing articles about retro. What is it? Why do we see more and more retro designs on the web and why it is becoming so fashionable. These are some questions that we want to answer.

First of all what is retro style? Among many sources the Wikipedia defines retro style as culturally outdated or aged style (…) that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. In simple words, retro is what has become trendy once again. It may usually apply to trends that date back around 15 to 20 years.

When we get into details the word retro comes from Latin prefix meaning “back, backwards”, which implies the direction towards the past rather than progress. We have some words like retrospective that imply a look back into the past mostly in a nostalgic way or a contemplation of the past.

We have seen such retrospective in fashion, car design and other areas of art. But what about web design? Do we have something to look back in the history of the internet. My opinion is that we not necessarily have to search for directions in the past of the internet but developers and designers go into a great direction of retro design in art.

All of these efforts to wake up the past art in the modern technology is a great idea and I want to show you some interesting and astonishing websites. Some of those sites show a flashback towards retro colours, a bit more dimmed and muted. Most of those sites create a vintage look that makes the web even more inspiring place to visit.

There are also certain schemes that directly remind us of some past advertisements or posters from around the middle of the past century. Muted colours and respectively small amount of them indicate the restriction that printing industry had around 1950s and 1970s. There were no possibilities of showing full colours on print and some of current websites perfectly show the atmosphere of the retro style.

We have also seen a number of other indicators that show a direction towards the design from the past. Retro fonts and usage of retro textures are also more and more visible in the internet. And by no means it is a negative phenomenon. Most of those sites look gorgeous and constitute really good design example.

A few things for the afterword. There are so many amazing sites that I really had a hard time choosing some examples and if I wanted to put all of them I would have to make around 200 sites-long post. It would be a bit longish and probably you would be tired after first 30 or 40 site examples so this time the post is shorter. Have an inspirational day with us.
